Most people lose their chance of getting a raise by making “stupid” mistakes like losing their temper or simply asking for too much of a raise. I will give you a step-by-step guide to getting that big raise.

1) Find out what you are worth. Look at your experience, education, and skills. Find out what other people with similar backgrounds are making. Create a diagram showing that people with less experience are getting paid more than you.

2) Find out what you want. When you come up with your desired raise in your base salary go over 2%. If you want 8% then ask for 10%. However, do not block other ways of getting a raise and only think about base salary. Consider an enhancement in time off, vacation time, sick time, etc. When you get what you are going to ask for together you will have Plan A done.

3) Now you need to come up with another set of desired terms in your raise. However, these should be set lower than what you desired on Plan A. I suggest dropping what you want in your base salary and raise your perks from what they were in Plan A. This will be Plan B if you can’t get anything close to Plan A. Always have a Plan B.

6) Be clear on what you want. Human Resources Directors do not like it when you ask for different things in the middle of negotiations. Remember that these are negotiations so negotiate. Do not stick to one thing because this is giving the employer an ultimatum and they do not like it when people do that. Try to be nice. Don’t turn this into an argument because if you do they will win.

7) If they will not give you what you want you may have to go to your Plan B. If you do the same general rules still apply. If they turn this plan down, too, you have to make a decision. You can either try to continue working down or ask them for a suggestion. I think you should ask for a suggestion. Find out what they will give you and add a couple small things to it. If they accept what you add get out. This will be the best you can get.

If you follow these steps you should be able to get out with a better looking raise. Remember to follow each step carefully and use any information that you can get.
