Lovebirds are smaller versions of parrots. They don't mimic words as well as parrots do. They possess green bodies but have differently colored heads. Lovebirds were named because a pair of the resemble lovers sitting together preening each other. These birds are peculiar as they are loving only to their respective partners and don't extend love to others of their own kind.

Lovebirds are small enough to fit into a standard size cage of 36 by 20 by 20 inches. This lesser space is ideal for housing the cage indoors. Lovebirds are good escorts as they love to accompany the human family in their activities. Humans become their flock and these birds will mirror what you do. These bird show that they love you by their constant chattering and accompaniment. In fact, if you ignore them, they will chatter noisily until you give in to them. They are famous for their charming behavior which amuses owners.

It is a common myth that lovebirds must exist together in pairs. If you want a loving companion, it is better to buy just one lovebird. If you have more than one, it is better to house them separately. Two lovebirds housed together will be busy with each other and ignore the owner. If you are busy and away form home most of the day, then a second lovebird will be the playmate.

Lovebirds are self-grooming as they preen themselves by combing feathers with the beak. It is unnecessary to bathe your lovebirds with soap and water. However, these birds enjoy splashing in a shallow bird bath. You can also use a small water pistol to squirt water on them. After contact water, the lovebirds love to comb their feathers.

You can feed your lovebird commercial food pellets. If you have time, it is cheaper to cut fresh fruit and vegetables for your lovebird. Offer small quantities as you have to discard decayed leftovers daily. You can also treat your pet to small amounts of what you eat except for dairy products, avocado and alcohol.

If you wish your pet to ride on your shoulder, you need to clip its wings to prevent it from flying away. Visit your vet for this as you can't afford to make mistakes!
